KATIE’S APPROVED LIST FOR EATING

On this page, if you scroll down, you will find our pantry list of food products that can be safely added to your diet without worrying about added chemicals that throw off your biochemistry and contribute to unwanted physical conditions.

The food pyramid to the right is a quick reference and overview of the REID Program food categories.  Please see the REID Program page on this website for more information. These are foods recommended for your daily dietary choices.  (Click image to enlarge.)

This Pantry list below is a work in progress, and will change and grow over time. It is intended to bring you a variety of recommended “approved” food products that are safe for the lifestyle changes recommended in the REID Program.

Is there a food you have questions about or one you’d like reviewed to be put on either list?

We welcome your recommendation.  Send us your thoughts, and we will get back to you! If your food item is a winner, we will add it to the KALE listings. If you think it is dangerous, and causing problems when you eat it, we will research it and, if confirmed, we will add it to Katie’s “no-no” list!

Fermentation Products

We only promote companies offering uncompromised, high quality fermented foods.  Not all fermented foods are healthy, so beware. Look for products that use vegetables, a low protein food, and without added sugars. La Vie! is a trusted company. They make healthy fermented food products with great taste and rejuvenation properties. We discovered La Vie! during a conference Unblind My Mind organized in 2014, thanks to a number of people at the conference savvy to healthy ways of fermenting foods.    An important note: Fermented foods containing high protein, like fermented milk to make yogurt, contain free glutamate and should be avoided by those aiming to reduce excess glutamate in the diet.

Nuts & Seeds

Nuts and seeds add much-needed variety, minerals, and nutrients to the diet. Calcium, magnesium, and zinc are just a few minerals provided by a diet rich in nuts and seeds. Don’t limit yourself to the ones you know – branch out and try new seeds and nuts.  Buy organic and go nuts! Here’s a link to a supplier that we like.

Ice Cream Cone

My daughter has always looked longingly at ice cream in a cone. Now there’s a healthy option without all the additives. Raw Daddy Foods has all sorts of mouth watering meals in a cone.

Spices

We recommend that you avoid products that use the term “spices” in their ingredient list, so that you know exactly what “spices” are in what you are eating. Even in products that are supposed to be only herbs and spices, it is common to find added flavorings, MSG, or caking agents in a spice manufacturer’s product. Simply Organic clearly labels their herbs and spices and uses only organic ingredients. Now, that’s simple! And its gets our recommendation for a healthy pantry.

Traditional Medicinals

Is it that time of the year again? We gather together for the holidays creating fond memories, spreading festive cheer, and sharing…germs. A hot cup of tea is a soothing, long-time remedy for battling the common cold. But, all teas are not created equal. Teas should be nothing but leaves or roots of plants. The Traditional Medicinals Tea is a brand that keeps to the meaning of tea. Many common teas contain additives, such as “natural flavors” – which often contain free glutamates and other ingredients not found on the label. The Traditional Medicinals Organic “Throat Coat” is a soothing blend, and can relieve a dry, sore throat.  The slippery elm bark contains mucilage, and really does coat the throat.

OrganicVille Tomato Sauce

Why does OrganicVille Tomato Sauce get a recommendation from us?  First, it has a glass container. Cans are coated with various chemicals, sometimes including free glutamate. Because of this, we recommend avoiding any food product packaged in a can.  Glass jars make items more expensive, but glass is a container that you can be certain will not leach into the food that it holds. OrganicVille food items have clear labels and all pass the test of not containing additives with free glutamate – no vague listings such as “spices,” nor additives such as citric acid are in this product.  And, it’s organic! It is great to use this sauce as a base and add in shredded carrots, sweet potatoes and broccoli.

Bread (3 recommendations)

Although, I have not found the perfect bread, these three breads come pretty close.  I have not noticed any negative reactions from my very sensitive child. With a bread option comes many meal options such as various sandwiches, French toast, or egg on toast. (1) Grindstone Bakery bread may be ordered online on their website: www.grindstonebakery.com (2) If your child is sensitive to textures, the brown rice bread from Food For Life is an option. (3) Paleo Bread is available online from Julian Bakery.

Tinkyada Brown Rice Pasta

Finding a rice pasta that is not mushy is tricky. Also finding a pasta that doesn’t contain soy flour is also tricky. Tinkyada contains just rice and water and all the different pasta shapes have a firm pasta when cooked right.

Snack Bars

Looking for a snack bar with protein? Here’s a company that I’ve drilled and trust their ingredients, Two Moms In the Raw. I’ve requested the removal of the vague “organic spices” label but in the meantime have verified that these are truly organic spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and cocoa. Also, the company goes through extensive effort to source high quality ingredients. WHAT MAKES OUR NUT BARS GREAT? Our Nut Bars are what we like to call a cinnamon roll without the roll. They are a great combination of Nuts, Fruit and Spices that provide a sweet, nutty treat for after a workout, during a long day on the job or to give you the boost you need for an over-the-top recess. Two Moms in the Raw Blueberry Granola Gluten Free, 8-Ounce

Nutbutters or Seedbutters

Nutbutters or seedbutters are a great protein addition to rice cakes, apples, celery, and even nutbutter cookies. Look for raw, unroasted, organic brands. Naturally sweet, the raw cashews in our smooth and creamy purée have a complex, yet subtle character, lending creamy texture and dense nutrition to smoothies, sauces, desserts, and more. Artisana™ Organic Raw Cashew Butter is a great way to add iron, essential vitamins and minerals to your diet. A fundamental food for creating healthy recipes. Ingredients: Organic Raw Cashews Refrigeration not necessary. Note: Oil separation occurs naturally, stir before serving. Made in a facility that processes tree nuts, but does not process any peanuts, gluten, dairy or soy. http://artisanafoods.com/products/cashew

Coconut oil

Raw organic coconut oil is a great oil for cooking because of its ability to withstand high temperatures and it’s a great spread on toast, added to rice, or used in baking. I also use it to moisturize my skin. The oil has natural anti-fungal properties as a bonus. Artisana Organic Raw Coconut oil is non-hydrogenated, cholesterol-free and comprised of medium-chain fatty acids which are broken efficiently by the body, providing an immediate source of energy. When cooking or baking, use as a substitute for butter or margarine. With a light fresh fragrance, it is food for the body, both inside and out. Go ahead and rub in this natural moisturizer right on your skin or in your hair as an oil treatment. Watch it shine! Ingredients: Organic Raw Extra Virgin Coconut Oil Refrigeration not recommended Note: Coconut oil is solid and opaque at room temperature and becomes clear once liquified. Made in a facility that processes tree nuts, but does not process any peanuts, gluten, dairy or soy. http://artisanafoods.com/products/extra-virgin-coconut-oil

Kettle Potato Chips with Sea Salt

There aren’t many potato chip brands and flavors that don’t contain added free-glutamates, but here is one.  Note how this brand does not use canola oil.  Be careful though, the other flavors may contain free-glutamates such as in yeast extract in their pepper flavored product. Ingredients: Organic potatoes, organic vegetable oil (safflower and/or sunflower oil) sea salt.

Organic Rice Cakes

These simple rice snacks with just rice and sea salt are a great way to add crunch to your meal. Add nut butter, seed butter, honey, tuna salad, or chicken salad to make light snacks or meals. Be sure to read the ingredients because some flavors or brands add free glutamates or other additives.
